The show · The album (2024)
On turning sixty, Michel Tasky wrote 14 songs about the loves that worked out and the ones that didn't, about his passion for Rio de Janeiro, and about time, which passes for all of us.
Alma Apressada ("Hurried Soul") is a nostalgic, witty journey where the syncopation of samba, samba-canção and bossa nova meets the vintage elegance of French chanson, with a touch of cabaret. Between songs, Michel tells the stories behind them (betrayal, disillusion, migration, the choices that define us) and audiences recognise themselves in every one.
Arrangements by Itamar Assiere, keyboardist and arranger for Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins and João Bosco, for the Portuguese songs, and by guitarist Elodie Bouny for the French songs.
“An imperfect human being looking into life's mirror at sixty, thinking about what he did, who he was, what he lived and what tomorrow will bring.”

“Michel is Belgian, like Jacques Brel. With the advantage of being genuinely bilingual, a malandro in both styles.”
Hugo Sukman, journalist and music researcher, on Um Malandro em Paris (translated from Portuguese)
Who is Michel Tasky
Michel Tasky was born and raised in a suburb of Brussels, in the French-speaking Belgium of the 1960s. He landed in Rio de Janeiro in 1993 as a young economist, setting up projects for Médecins Sans Frontières, and soon realised his soul was Brazilian, and musical. He stayed for almost thirty years, became a Brazilian citizen, and now splits his life between Lisbon and long seasons in Rio.
Rio's nightlife was his school. He spent time with the legendary Cantoras do Rádio, studied piano with Cristovão Bastos and pandeiro with Marcos Suzano, shared the stage with the Meninas da Serrinha, guardians of the jongo tradition, and ran the carnival bloco Tem Gringo no Samba with Eliane Faria. He launched his first three albums at Rio's Teatro Maison de France.
With a degree in Brazilian popular music and arranging from UNIRIO, Michel lives at the crossroads of Carioca malandragem, French chanson and Portuguese fado. At sixty, he turned that journey into songs of his own.
Before Brazil, Michel already played piano and had learned to sing jazz on a student exchange in the United States. In Rio, his artistic career ran for years alongside his work as an economist and public-health specialist: almost two decades in humanitarian work, a borderless spirit he carried into his music.
Bossa nova was the way in. Then came the samba-canção of the Cantoras do Rádio, choro (four years at the Escola Portátil de Música, cavaquinho in hand), the roots samba of the city's best rodas, and street carnival, saxophone in hand. In 2004, a year-long weekly residency with the Meninas da Serrinha at Bar Cultural Sacrilégio led to a European tour with the group Água de Beber, including the Music Village in Brussels.
He sang in the clubs that defined an era (Mistura Fina, Rio Jazz Club, Jazzmania, Vinicius Bar, Semente, Casa Julieta de Serpa) as well as at Sala Baden Powell and the Centro Cultural de Referência da Música Carioca, and led countless samba circles at Trapiche Gamboa, where he shot the video for “Partiu”.
On record, he translated MPB gems into French on Accord d'Accord, dove into roots samba on Deu Samba (Seven Music / Universal Music), and gathered sambas that play with France on Um Malandro em Paris, selected by the Quintas do BNDES programme, performed in Brussels and broadcast on the Stingray channel in several countries.
After the pandemic, a move to Lisbon and an accident that kept him off stage for a while, Michel is back with Alma Apressada, his first all-original album, and is now recording Les Rides du Temps, in French.
A singer and pianist, he also plays cavaquinho, accordion, melodica, pandeiro and saxophone.
Records
Four albums and a fifth on the way: from MPB in French to roots samba, all the way to original songwriting.
Thirteen original songs in French, for piano and voice.

His first all-original album: samba, samba-canção, bossa nova and French chanson about love, belonging and the passing of time.

Sambas that mention France or play with the French language, dressed in contemporary-retro gafieira style: from Assis Valente and Nei Lopes to Chico Buarque, plus new songs by Michel.

Roots samba recorded in Rio's suburbs, mixing classics with one original, “Arpoador”.

MPB gems adapted into French, keeping the charm of Brazilian speech. The title nods to Chico Buarque's “Joana Francesa”.
Press
“From French music, Michel was malandro enough to take the lightness and the humour. From samba, the swing, the lyricism and the intelligence.”
Hugo Sukman, journalist, music researcher and former Paris correspondent for O Globo, on Um Malandro em Paris (translated from Portuguese)
